Encrypt a PDF before distributing it
Set a password of at least six characters to produce an AES-256 encrypted PDF. Use a long, unique password and share it through a separate channel from the document.
Control who can open a PDF copy
Password encryption makes the shared file unreadable without the opening password. Anyone who knows that password can read the contents. Share the password through a separate appropriate channel, and use redaction if particular information should be absent from the shared copy.
Before you start
Keep a safe copy of the password: FolioSprint does not provide password recovery. Encryption protects access to the file, but it cannot control what an authorized recipient does after opening it. Check compatibility with the PDF reader your recipient uses.
How to use Protect PDF

If the source is already encrypted, enter its current password in the options.
- Choose a new password
Use a strong, unique password with at least six characters. Keep it somewhere safe.
- Download and verify
Reopen the output in a compatible PDF reader and check that the new password is required.
Protect PDF questions
Can FolioSprint recover a forgotten password?
No password recovery is provided. Keep the password and an authorized original safely.
Does a password permanently hide selected text?
No. Once unlocked, the document contains its original visible information. Use Redact PDF to remove regions from the output.
What encryption does this use?
The tool writes an AES-256 encrypted PDF. Use a PDF reader that supports the encryption in the resulting file.
What happens to my files?
Files are private to your session or account. Free downloads expire after 2 hours; Pro downloads after 7 days. You can delete them sooner from your workspace.
