Make image-heavy PDFs easier to share
Compression reduces the resolution and quality of embedded pictures and optimizes content streams. Start with Balanced for documents that combine text and photos. Use Smaller file when delivery size matters more than fine image detail.
Fit a document into an upload limit
Image-heavy scans usually offer more room for reduction than PDFs that contain mostly text. Compression optimizes images and content streams, so a PDF that is already efficient may not become much smaller. Keep the original when image detail matters.
Before you start
A PDF containing mostly text may already be very small and may not shrink. Compression does not guarantee a specific attachment limit. Check fine print, diagrams and scanned text at normal reading size before sending the result.
How to use Compress PDF
- Upload the original
Use the best source copy available. Repeated compression can degrade photographs and scanned text.
- Choose a compression level
Start with Balanced. Choose Smaller file for stronger image compression or Higher image quality to preserve more detail.
- Compare the result
Check the downloaded size and zoom in on small text, charts and signatures before sending it.
Compress PDF questions
Can I compress a PDF to exactly 1 MB?
There is no guaranteed target size. Try a stronger setting and check the result. Remove unnecessary pages or split the file if a strict limit still cannot be met.
Will text stay selectable?
This tool does not intentionally rebuild every page as an image. Existing text normally stays selectable, but you should inspect the downloaded file.
Why is my compressed PDF still large?
The source may already be optimized, or its images may need to retain substantial detail. Try removing pages you do not need instead of repeatedly compressing the same copy.
What happens to my files?
Files are private to your session or account. Free downloads expire after 2 hours; Pro downloads after 7 days. You can delete them sooner from your workspace.
